Self-Disclosure in Managing the Mental Health of Generation Z Following Parental Divorce Through Anonymous TikTok Accounts
Main Article Content
Abstract
Parental divorce can affect Generation Z's mental health, emotional communication, and self-disclosure. Limited communication within post-divorce families encourages adolescents to seek alternative spaces to express their emotional experiences, one of which is through anonymous social media accounts. This study aims to understand the experiences of Generation Z individuals with divorced parents in utilizing anonymous TikTok accounts as a means of self-disclosure for mental health management through the perspective of Communication Privacy Management (CPM). This research employed a qualitative approach using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) involving four Generation Z participants who actively use anonymous TikTok accounts. The findings reveal that anonymous TikTok accounts serve as a space for expressing emotions, personal experiences, and psychological distress that are difficult to communicate directly. Self-disclosure practices function as a coping mechanism that helps participants achieve emotional release, while anonymity is utilized as a privacy management strategy that enables them to remain open without revealing their personal identities. These findings indicate that anonymous TikTok accounts enable Generation Z individuals with divorced parents to negotiate their need to express emotional experiences while maintaining control over their privacy in digital spaces.
